Warren Statement on Supplemental Vote

Statement

Date: Feb. 13, 2024
Location: Washington, D.C.
Issues: Foreign Aid

“For the last six months, Republican lawmakers have held hostage aid for Ukraine while our ally fights for its freedom and democracy against Putin’s invasion. Congress’ support for Ukraine is more urgent than ever after Donald Trump’s latest threats to abandon the NATO alliance. This bill also delivers funding for the security of mosques and synagogues in Massachusetts and provides humanitarian aid for people suffering around the world, including in Gaza. The vote also comes in the wake of President Biden’s recent executive action requiring every nation as a condition of receiving U.S. aid to certify in writing that it follows international law, protects civilians in war zones and allows for humanitarian aid—and it requires the Department of Defense and State Department to review those claims. The need for this change in US policy is highlighted by the actions of Prime Minister Netanyahu and his right-wing government as they have demonstrated an appalling disregard for the lives of Palestinian civilians with indiscriminate bombing and blocking desperately needed humanitarian aid in Gaza. Congress must ensure that this new condition for U.S. aid is enforced, and the U.S. must use its leverage to help end this war, bring the hostages home, and start working toward long-term peace.”
