Scott Statement on January Jobs Report

“Today’s jobs report marks the start of another strong year of job growth. This year, Congressional Democrats will continue to prioritize legislation that builds the economy from the bottom up and middle out.

At the end of last year, the Committee advanced two bipartisan proposals—the Bipartisan Workforce Pell Act and A Stronger Workforce for America Act—that would help Americans get the skills and support they need to benefit from our economic growth. By expanding Pell Grant eligibility to high-quality, short-term training programs, the Bipartisan Workforce Pell Act would allow more adults to attend and complete courses that will help them compete in the modern economy. A Stronger Workforce for America Act would make critical updates to our workforce development system to better connect workers with good-paying job opportunities and help employers access a pipeline of talented workers.

Moreover, this week, Committee Democrats shared our vision—the Roadmap to College Student Success—for reforming America’s higher education system. The ‘roadmap’ brings together a series of bold proposals focused on bringing down the cost of college, helping students access a quality degree, and—once students are in school—providing them with the support they need to graduate.

Throughout the year, Committee Democrats will continue to add to the ‘roadmap’ other key legislation to help students access an affordable, quality degree that leads to a rewarding career. Our proactive agenda will ensure that, regardless of a student’s background, a college degree is never out of reach.”
