LEADER JEFFRIES STATEMENT ON PASSAGE OF THE GOVERNMENT FUNDING PACKAGE

Statement

Date: March 6, 2024
Location: Washington, DC

"House Democrats have made clear from the beginning of this Congress that we will seek bipartisan common ground with our Republican colleagues wherever possible and fight Republican extremism whenever necessary.

Because of the work of President Biden, House Democrats, Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro and our appropriators, we ensured WIC is fully funded, countering drastic Republican cuts that would take food out of the mouths of 1.4 million women, infants and children. The bipartisan spending bill invests in our nation’s affordable housing, preventing cuts that would have resulted in five million people evicted from their homes. We are also supporting veterans, families and seniors working to make ends meet and protecting victims of domestic violence and other vulnerable communities with funding for critical public safety programs. The spending package strengthens programs that will ensure we can confront the climate crisis with the fierce urgency of now. In addition, House Democrats fought back against hundreds of extreme poison pill policy riders, including ones seeking to take away a woman’s right to make her own reproductive health care decisions and attack the LGBTQ community.

Once again, Democrats protected the American people and delivered the overwhelming majority of votes necessary to get things done. As the appropriations process progresses, we will continue to put people over politics and fight for another spending agreement that fully meets the needs of hardworking American taxpayers across our nation."
