RANKING MEMBER THOMPSON MARKS 22 YEARS SINCE THE SEPTEMBER 11 ATTACKS

Statement

Date: Sept. 11, 2023
Location: Washington, D.C.

"Twenty-two years ago, we tragically lost 3,000 of our fellow Americans in the deadliest terror attack in our history -- profoundly altering our way of life in our Nation. Today, we pledge to Never Forget and remember the lives lost, including the brave first responders who paid the ultimate price to aid their fellow Americans.

As we reflect today, we must also recommit ourselves to protecting the homeland from an ever-evolving threat landscape. While foreign actors remain a real threat, recent attacks make it clear that domestic terrorism -- often compounded by white supremacist ideology and antisemitism -- remains the greatest threat to our national security. We must also remain vigilant against all emerging threats -- including cyber-attacks, the trafficking of fentanyl, and natural disasters made increasingly worse by climate change.

Let today also serve as a reminder of the unity and solidarity that were shared after the 9/11 Attacks -- and recognize that we often must put politics aside and work together in our endeavor to secure our great nation."
