Republicans Once Again Fail to Pass Their Own Bills

Press Release

Date: Nov. 15, 2023
Location: Washington, DC

"House Republicans have once again failed to pass their extreme, partisan funding bills. It is abundantly clear they do not have the votes. Last night, I called for a meeting of the Democratic and Republican leaders of the Appropriations Committee to begin a good-faith conference process. If we do not start now, we will face another shutdown threat or need another continuing resolution that no one wants.

The Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Commerce, Justice, Science funding bills were some of their most harmful. They furthered their goals of making abortion illegal nationally, eliminating public education, and slashing investments in biomedical research including efforts to find a cure for cancer. The bills they could not advance this week would harm the economy, undermining workers and job training programs and giving billionaires and big corporations more room to cheat on their taxes or pay no taxes at all. And our law enforcement was not spared from their callous cuts. With the blessing of their Republican leadership, they want to eliminate thousands of law enforcement positions, crippling an already strained workforce of state and local law enforcement officers. Government should help hardworking people, children, families, and the elderly, not make it harder for them to make ends meet.

I hope this marks the end of this pointless exercise that has wasted countless hours and forced us to pass yet another continuing resolution to keep the government open."
