Pelosi Statement on APEC Leaders' Week in San Francisco

Statement

Location: San Francisco
Issues: Foreign Affairs

"It is with great enthusiasm and pride that San Francisco is hosting APEC Leaders' Week! San Francisco has long been recognized as a golden gateway to the Asia-Pacific, and we are proud of the magnificent welcome that our City has given to our partners from all across the Indo-Pacific. When engaging with foreign leaders, we are always focused on security, economy and governance. Over the years, we have found common ground, which is growing, with many of the nations present at APEC.

I join in saluting President Biden, Vice President Harris and their entire Administration for carrying these values forward in its mission to build a free and open Indo-Pacific. This is especially true of the careful balance the Biden-Harris Administration has struck between increasing trade and protecting labor rights. The presence of our Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Trade Representative Katherine Tai, Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su and our local labor leaders is a manifestation of a fair and productive path forward.

Importantly, I am pleased that, in these discussions, leaders are paying closer attention to the indigenous peoples in many of the countries represented at APEC. It is critical that we not only listen to the needs of indigenous communities, but ensure they are fully included as we address the climate crisis.

In our shining City by the Bay, it is our hope to lay the groundwork for continued cooperation on our shared security, economic and governance goals. By the time APEC leaders convene again in Peru next year, we will hopefully have forged more progress in Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Future for All!"
