Meeks, Bera Issue Statement Commemorating Rohingya Genocide Remembrance Day

Statement

Date: Aug. 27, 2023
Location: Washington, D.C.
Issues: Foreign Affairs

"Six years ago, the Burmese military forcibly displaced over 750,000 Rohingya from their homes in Burma and into Bangladesh. Nearly 1 million Rohingya refugees continue to languish in refugee camps in Bangladesh, and 400,000 Rohingya remain in Rakhine, where they are vulnerable to the whims of the Burmese military.

Though the United States has rightfully made a determination that the Military junta committed genocide against the Rohingya, there needs to be further action by the United States and its allies and partners, including refugee assistance, humanitarian aid, and accountability mechanisms. As we join with the Rohingya to commemorate this solemn day of remembrance, we pledge to continue our support so they may craft a better future that is not just free of violence, but full of promise."
