Statement on the announcement of the Comprehensive La Conchita Study

"I was pleased to learn of Governor Schwarzenegger's decision to pursue a comprehensive assessment of La Conchita. In January my office sent a letter to the Governor requesting that his office remain engaged and responsive to the needs of the community and local leaders as they sought to address the La Conchita situation.

"Assisting the residents of La Conchita in their recovery is an important priority for me, and I think this assessment will help determine what options are available and what course of action is best to pursue. I am also concerned about the implications that the potential closure of Highway 101 and the rail lines have on the local economy and on public safety.

"Assessing all of the options for La Conchita is a significant step in the recovery process, and I am pleased that the combined efforts of the federal, state, and local agencies and officials have been successful in obtaining money for this important next step."
