Press Release

Date: May 12, 2023

Today, Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced that Dan Meyer will be retiring after an esteemed career in the public and private sector, including service in both Chambers of Congress and the White House.

Dan has served as Chief of Staff to Speaker McCarthy for the past four years, and before that as Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs and Chief of Staff to Speaker Newt Gingrich. Dan is the first person in modern history to serve as Chief of Staff to two separate Speakers. His impact on this institution is without peer. He will stay with the Speaker's team to help with the transition through early June.

"I want to congratulate Dan on his upcoming and well-deserved retirement after serving in Congress and the White House over the past four decades," said Speaker McCarthy. "Every Member of Congress, much less a member of the House leadership, understands how important it is to have great staff and more importantly, to have someone to manage that staff. It has been a testament to Dan's management and leadership skills that he has helmed the offices of two different Speakers of the House, and just like my good friend Speaker Gingrich, I am personally grateful for all of Dan's work for me, our staff, this institution, and for our great nation. I am glad that we will continue to benefit from his wise guidance in the weeks to come, and I wish him the best when he gets to begin the next chapter of his life."

With Dan's retirement, Speaker McCarthy announced the following changes to his senior leadership staff:

Machalagh Carr will be Chief of Staff to the Speaker. Machalagh, who has served as General Counsel to Speaker McCarthy for over four years, brings more than 20 years of public and private sector experience to the job. Machalagh is a trusted and strategic counselor with a dozen years of experience in the House of Representatives, including senior leadership roles on three House committees.

John Leganski will be Deputy Chief of Staff. John has played a key role in each of McCarthy's leadership offices, most recently serving as his top floor lieutenant during the election for Speaker and longtime trusted advisor on the legislative process, floor and messaging strategy, institutional operations, and implementation of the House Republican agenda.

Natalie Joyce will be Deputy Chief of Staff, where she will play an integral role in shepherding the Speaker's legislative and conference priorities through Congress. She will also be appointed by the Speaker as the head of the Office of Interparliamentary Affairs for the U.S. House of Representatives. Natalie has worked for Speaker McCarthy for twelve years as top advisor for Member Services--serving as a liaison to Members of the Republican Conference and consulting congressional offices on how to better serve their constituents in Congress. She will also continue to lead the House Republican Steering Committee for the Speaker which is charged with making selections for chairmanships and committee assignments.

Kim Hamm will be General Counsel to the Speaker, having served as the Speaker's Deputy General Counsel. In this new role, she will lead the Speaker's office on all legal issues. Kim has extensive oversight, litigation, and regulatory experience in the private and public sectors, including senior legal positions in both Chambers of Congress and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Finally, after the departure of Matt Sparks last month, who served Speaker McCarthy for over a decade and led communications efforts for him for more than six years, Speaker McCarthy announced the following changes in his communications staff:

Mark Bednar will be Head of Communications, handling media relations and communications strategy. Mark has been the lead spokesman for Speaker McCarthy for four years and has worked in communications for both the House and campaigns for more than a decade.

Caleb Smith will be Head of Communications, overseeing content and digital strategy. Caleb has a dozen years of work experience on the Hill, serving as Director of Digital Communications and photographer for the last three Republican Speakers of the House.

"I want to thank Matt, a skilled communications lead, who will remain a trusted advisor to me in a different capacity," said McCarthy. "His vision and execution of a modern communications practice is now widely established throughout the Hill and has helped me and our Conference connect our agenda directly with the American people. While his presence will be missed, Mark and Caleb will continue to lead a cutting-edge and effective communications shop."
