Ernst Fights to Protect Women's Sports and Scholarship Opportunities

During the first week of Women's History Month, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) joined Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) and her colleagues in an effort to protect women's sports and scholarship opportunities by ensuring that school athletics comply with the Title IX recognition of a person's reproductive biology and genetics at birth.

"Title IX was created to offer the same playing field to female athletes as their male counterparts -- not to subject women to second place and the sidelines," said Ernst. "President Biden's actions are a slap in the face to female athletes in every sport. I will always fight to ensure our hardworking women and girls across Iowa have a fair playing field to compete for athletic titles and the critical academic opportunities that accompany them."

The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act would make it a violation of federal law for a recipient of federal funds who operates, sponsors, or facilitates athletic programs or activities to permit a person whose sex is male to participate in an athletic program or activity that is designated for women or girls. Last year, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed similar legislation to prohibit biological males from competing in female sports offered by Iowa schools, colleges, and universities.
