Hickenlooper Cheers Senate Passage of Same-Sex Marriage Protection Bill

 Today, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper celebrated the Senate passage of the bipartisan Respect for Marriage Act, which would protect marriage equality and guarantee same-sex and interracial couples have the same rights afforded to all other marriages.

"Club Q underscores how much work we have left to do, but today same-sex marriages finally have the same protections as every other marriage. Americans overwhelmingly support the constitutional right to marry who you love. Love is love is love!" said Hickenlooper.

The bill heads to the U.S. House of Representatives next and then President Biden's desk for final signature.

As governor of Colorado, Hickenlooper signed into law legislation that allowed same-sex couples to enter into civil unions in 2013. Same-sex marriage became legal in Colorado in 2014.

The Respect for Marriage Act comes in the wake of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' concurring opinion for Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization which overturned Roe v. Wade, where he encouraged the Supreme Court to revisit past cases and reconsider the right to contraception and same-sex marriage.
