Congressman Higgins Applauds President Biden's Giant Leap of Action With the Cancer Moonshot

Press Release

Date: Sept. 12, 2022

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26), who serves as Co-Chair of the bipartisan Congressional Cancer Caucus, applauded President Biden's bold actions to end cancer as we know it.

On September 12, 2022, marking the 60th anniversary of President Kennedy's moonshot speech, Biden announced additional steps aimed at reaching the Cancer Moonshot.

"Like the effort to land on the moon, this launch in the fight against cancer is about believing in the possibility and working with urgency toward the goal," said Congressman Higgins. "This is the giant leap we need to turn promising research into new treatments and therapies, and to turn hope into healing for those afflicted with cancer and families that love them."

Higgins has been a vocal advocate for increasing the nation's investment in medical research and is a leader on cancer policy with introduction of the Cancer Drug Parity Act and the Lung Cancer Screening Registry and Quality Improvement Act.

According to United for Medical Research, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is currently funding 7,190 research projects in New York State supported by over $4.5 billion in federal grant funding. In Congressman Higgins' Western New York District, 275 projects have received nearly $111.8 million in NIH funding in 2022 alone, including over $37 million for Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. In 2021, NIH funding supported over 44,800 jobs and over $8.9 billion in economic activity in New York State.
