Congressman Kildee on Failure to Bring Up Stock Trading Ban

Statement

Date: Oct. 2, 2022
Location: Flint, MI

Congressman Dan Kildee, Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives did not advance legislation to ban Members of Congress, their spouses, and their dependent children from buying, selling and trading individual stocks:

"I introduced bipartisan legislation at the beginning of the year to ban Members of Congress and their families from trading stocks while in elected office. For months, I have worked to build support for this legislation, including pushing my own party leadership to act. I am very disappointed that Democrats did not vote on this legislation before leaving Washington.

"Elected officials should serve the public's best interest, not their own self-interest. This is common sense legislation to begin restoring the people's faith in our government again. I call on Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Schumer to allow for a vote on this critical legislation."

In January 2022, Congressman Kildee introduced bipartisan legislation, the Transparent Representation Upholding Service and Trust (TRUST) in Congress Act to ban Members of Congress, their spouses and their dependent children from trading stocks while in office.
