DeLauro Statement on Legal Challenge Against Connecticut's Assault Weapons Ban

Press Release

Date: Sept. 30, 2022

Chair of the House Appropriations Committee Rosa DeLauro today released a statement in response to a federal lawsuit filed by the Connecticut Citizens Defense League seeking to repeal the assault weapons ban in Connecticut.

"Mass shootings are becoming far too familiar in the United States, and assault rifles are often the weapon of choice. We want our communities to be safer -- free of criminals and the threat of gun violence. To move us closer to that goal, Connecticut implemented a ban on assault weapons. Now, it faces a legal challenge that would make our communities less safe and allow for the sale of weapons of war in our state. That is unacceptable.

"We need a federal ban on assault weapons -- period. Until then, we must raise the age to purchase one of these weapons from 18 to 21. We cannot allow mass shootings to be commonplace.

"I am confident that Attorney General William Tong will deter this challenge that threatens the safety of our communities."
