Statement

Issues: Environment

Today, Reps. John B. Larson (CT-01) and Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) released the below statements following the Senate passage of an amendment to the Montreal Protocol that will limit emission of harmful chemicals. Reps. Larson and Bonamici worked to ensure all future amendments to certain multilateral environmental agreements, including the Montreal Protocol, would be enforceable under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) in 2019.

"The Senate's overdue approval of the Kigali Amendment is good news in our fight for clean air and against climate change," said Bonamici. "As a leader on the USMCA Working Group, I advocated for the Kigali Amendment to be included in USMCA because it is an important step to reduce emissions. This amendment reflects the important work Congressman Larson and I did to improve the environment provisions in the trade agreement. I'm committed to building on this significant action as we work to decarbonize every sector of our economy and reach net-zero emissions."

"The passage of the Kigali Amendment is another step forward in our efforts to help the environment with actions and not just words," said Larson. "During our time on the environment subgroup of the Houses Democrats' Trade Working Group for the USMCA, Rep. Bonamici and I fought to ensure the USMCA could continue to grow and remain relevant along with our future environmental obligations. Today is an example of that work in action. I look forward to working with the Administration to ensure all three countries uphold their commitment to the environment."
