Issues: Guns

Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, voted to pass the bipartisan gun violence prevention proposal negotiated by the Senate.

"Recently a teacher told me that after Uvalde, she sat down with her students and told them she would take a bullet for them," said Congresswoman Bonamici. "Conversations like this are happening in classrooms across the country, but they shouldn't have to. Congress must provide all students with safe learning environments free from the threat of gun violence. The House has passed a comprehensive slate of gun violence prevention legislation, supported by a majority of the American people, but until now the Senate had not acted. Today, the House passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which came out of bipartisan Senate negotiations and is a welcome step toward ending the tragedies we have seen far too often. I hope that President Biden signs the bill soon, and I will continue advocating for more policies that make our schools and communities safer."

The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act strengthens existing gun violence prevention laws, invests in children and family mental health services, and increases funding for schools. The legislation also invests $1 billion in Title IV-A of the Every Student Succeeds Act to increase students' access to safe and healthy schools. More information about the bill can be found here, and Bonamici's full statement for the record on the legislation can be found here.

Earlier in June, Congresswoman Bonamici helped the House pass significant legislation to curb gun violence in the wake of the tragedies in Uvalde, Buffalo, and other communities across the country.
