Chairman Nadler Condemns Supreme Court Decision Overturning Roe v. Wade

Statement

Date: June 24, 2022
Location: Washington, D.C.
Issues: Abortion

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler today issued the following statement after the Supreme Court issued a decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization:

"This radical rightwing Supreme Court has just ripped away a fundamental right that millions of Americans have relied on for nearly 50 years. This dangerous decision is a severe attack on women's rights and a grave insult to human dignity. For decades, the Roe decision has stood as a watershed moment in our Nation's history, recognizing the constitutional right of women to choose an abortion, which was a fundamental pillar of women's equality, autonomy, and personal liberty. By gutting this constitutional right, the Supreme Court has turned its back on decades of progress on reproductive rights and has stripped individuals of their power to make some of the most intimate life decisions, and instead, has given that power to the State. This outcome strikes at the very heart of a free society.

"The fight for women's reproductive rights has had many successes and setbacks over the last 50 years. While today's dangerous decision represents the most serious setback to date, it is certainly not the end of the road. I will do everything in my power as the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee to protect abortion access from the threats posed by Republicans and right-wing justices."
