Release: Khanna, Herrell, Porter, Donalds Introduce Bipartisan Bill Eliminating Gendered Pronouns From National Archives Code

Press Release

Today, Representatives Ro Khanna (D-CA), a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, Yvette Herrell (R-NM), Katie Porter (D-CA) and Byron Donalds (R-FL) announced bipartisan legislation to replace outdated language in Title 44 of the United States Code. Title 44 outlines the responsibilities of the Archivist and other senior officials at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

By changing the language in Title 44 to gender-neutral terms like "the Archivist," "the Director," and "the President," this bill will allow the important work being done by everyone at NARA to be recognized.

"It is past time that everyone, regardless of gender, is given the same recognition at the National Archives," said Rep. Khanna. "Replacing this outdated language is the least we can do to acknowledge the valuable contributions of thousands who have worked at NARA since its creation in 1934 and thousands more who will work there in the years to come. I strongly encourage my fellow members of Congress to support this bipartisan legislation."

"I am glad to work with my colleagues on the Oversight and Government Committee to modernize the United States Code in a commonsense and bipartisan fashion," said Rep. Herrell. "It is important that we offer legislative remedies to ensure our code is more consistent across the board."

"The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) plays an integral role in our nation's history and future. This bipartisan bill seeks to update antiquated language to recognize not only the devoted men of the NARA but also hardworking women who've contributed to this government agency," said Rep. Donalds. "I am proud to co-sponsor this common-sense bill."
