Yesterday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced final regulations to repeal the cruel Trump-era public charge policy which forced immigrant families to choose between their immigration status and accessing programs and services for their own health and well-being The Biden Administration's final rule not only clarifies what is and is not considered in a public charge determination, it also confirms that eligible immigrant families can use health care, nutrition, and housing programs without concerns for their immigration status.

"The announcement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to finalize a new "public charge" rule is a huge win for immigrant communities and will begin the process of repairing the damage caused by the Trump administration," said Rep. Chu. "The Trump-era rule, which disproportionately harmed communities of color, was not consistent with our nation's values. It caused widespread fear among immigrant communities, including those eligible for critical services such as Medicaid, SNAP and rental assistance. I applaud this final rule and urge DHS to look toward partnerships with trusted community organizations to conduct outreach to immigrants and their families in both a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner."
