Pelosi Statement on End of Prescription Drug Transition Period

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement marking the endof the prescription drug transition period that has allowed beneficiaries to stay on their existing medication regimens even if their new plans do not cover their drugs:

"Tomorrow marks the end of the prescription drug transition period, which ensured that seniors received the prescription drugs they rely upon. Without these protections, some seniors may be faced with the harsh reality that the medications they need are not covered under their new prescription drug plan.

"The transition period was critical in guaranteeing seniors access to their medications and Democrats will continue their efforts to enact common-sense reforms so that seniors receive the simple, affordable, and reliable prescription drug benefit they deserve.

"We must also extend the enrollment deadline beyond May 15 so that seniors are given the opportunity to make informed choices without being hit by the Bush prescription drug tax, which will result in a 7 percent lifetime penalty if seniors do not choose a plan by May 15th."
