BROWN PUSHES NEW EFFORT TO RESTORE DELPHI PENSIONS

Issues: Senior Citizens

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) introduced the bipartisan, bicameral Susan Muffley Act as an amendment to the Senate's FY 2023 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This legislation would restore retirement benefits to tens of thousands of Delphi salaried retirees, including thousands of retirees in Ohio.

"Retired Delphi salaried workers lost the retirement they earned, after their company went bankrupt during the Great Recession -- a time when Washington bailed out Wall Street, but left too many Americans on their own," said Brown. "I will use every tool available to work to restore full retirement benefits for the more than 5,000 Ohioans who earned these pensions over a lifetime of work."

When Delphi, a component parts manufacturer, finalized its bankruptcy in 2009, salaried Delphi retirees lost up to 70 percent of their pensions. For years, Brown led the fight in Congress to restore these pensions -- pressing officials from both parties to do the right thing. Introducing the Susan Muffley Act as an amendment to the FY23 NDAA, is another effort by Brown to restore the pensions that Delphi workers earned.

In August, Republicans blocked Brown's attempt to pass the Susan Muffley Act. Brown was joined by U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) in asking for unanimous consent for the passage of the legislation. The House of Representatives, led by U.S. Representatives Tim Ryan (D-OH-13) and Mike Turner (R-OH-10), passed the legislation by a bipartisan vote of 254-175 and the White House formally signaled President Biden's support for this bill.
