Titus Votes to Pass National Defense Authorization Act

Statement

Today Congresswoman Dina Titus (NV-01) issued the following statement after voting to pass the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2023, legislation that makes key investments to improve the lives of service members and military families while also strengthening our national security and diplomatic priorities.

"Today I voted to pass the National Defense Authorization Act, legislation which reflects my belief that service men and women and their families who are making sacrifices every day, workers powering the defense industrial base, civil servants, and scientists building technology of the future are the heart of our nation's defense."

"I am pleased that this Defense Authorization includes several important priorities I have advocated for, including my proposal that would make air travel easier for non-English speakers, international travelers, and people with vision or hearing impairments."

"This legislation is a major victory for Nevadans. It supports our troops stationed at home in Southern Nevada at Nellis and Creech Air Force Bases. And importantly, it does not include any funding for the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository. Our state does not use nuclear energy; we do not produce nuclear waste; and we should not be forced to store it."

Rep. Titus Championed the Following Provisions:

TRANSLATE Act (H.R. 5574): Makes air travel easier for non-English speakers, international travelers, and people with vision or hearing impairments by requiring the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to develop a plan to improve airport communications.

Protecting Semiconductor Supply Chain Materials from Authoritarians Act (H.R. 7372): Amends the Ukraine Freedom Support Act of 2014 to require the President to establish a semiconductor supply chain working group in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and submit reports to Congress on potential future global or geopolitical development that could severely disrupt the semiconductor supply chain.

Maternal Mortality Rates of Women Servicemembers: Requires a report on the impact of maternal mortality rates on female service members, including the identification of barriers to maternal health care access and recommendations for improvement.

Military Family Access to Infant Formula: Requires a report on the extent to which military families have been affected by the nationwide infant formula shortage.

Preventing Servicemember Exposure to Toxic Chemicals through Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) Substitutes: Requires a report from the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment on the status of certification efforts to replace AFFF on military installations, a major contributor to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), as well as a report on the prevalence of PFAS contamination from non-AFFF sources on military installations.

Report on Weaponry Support for Ukraine: Requires quarterly briefings for Congressional defense committees on Department of Defense efforts to support replenishment and revitalization of stocks of defensive and offensive weaponry provided to Ukraine by the United States.

Human Trafficking in Ukraine: Requires a report to congressional defense and foreign affairs committees from DOD and State Department on human trafficking resulting from the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
