Daines Statement on Removal of Portion of Libby's Asbestos Superfund Site From Epa's National Priorities List

Today, Senator Daines released the following statement in response to the EPA's announcement regarding the removal of a portion of the Libby Asbestos Superfund site from the EPA's National Priorities list.

"This announcement from the EPA demonstrates the two decades of extensive work that has gone into cleanup activities at the Libby Superfund site. While our job isn't over yet, this is a significant milestone, and I'm glad to see progress being made towards protecting the health of Montanans in the area," Daines said.

Background:

Daines has been leading efforts in the U.S. Senate to bring awareness to the dangers of asbestos exposure and has been instrumental in securing funding for asbestos cleanup and health screening practices.

In 2018, Daines announced a $2,499,999.00 grant for the Center for Asbestos Related Disease (CARD) in Libby.

In 2017, Daines announced that the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has been awarded a $1,672,106 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to help with the cleanup and restoration in Libby, Montana.

In 2017, Daines introduced a bill to safeguard local governments from having to take ownership of old federal buildings filled with asbestos after bankruptcy.
