Date: July 8, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Abortion

Today, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), Chair of the Pro Choice Caucus' Abortion Rights and Access Task Force, issued the following statement on President Biden's executive orders expanding access to medication abortion and providing legal support to those traveling for abortion care.

"The coordinated attack on abortion access in America is a public health crisis and we must use every federal tool available to confront it. I'm glad President Biden has heeded our calls to expand access to medication abortion and protect those seeking abortion care from criminalization. We've been calling for these measures, which are sorely needed in this moment and will help many access the safe and legal abortion care they need and deserve.

"I welcome the President's actions today and urge him to work with us to build on this progress by declaring a public health emergency to unlock critical flexibilities and resources to get patients the care they need now. Daily, I am hearing from patients, providers and advocates about the dire situation those seeking abortion care across the nation are in. Our work continues and I am not letting up."

Congresswoman Pressley has been a leading advocate for abortion access throughout her time in public life and she serves as Chair of the Pro-Choice Caucus's Abortion Rights and Access Task Force.

Last month, shortly before the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade, Rep. Pressley led her Black women colleagues in writing to President Biden urging him to declare a public health emergency amid the unprecedented threats to abortion rights nationwide. She also issued a statement condemning the Supreme Court decision and calling on the President to use every executive tool available to protect abortion access.

Rep. Pressley is a lead co-sponsor of the Women's Health Protection Act (WHPA), bicameral federal legislation to guarantee equal access to abortion care, everywhere. WHPA passed the House in September 2021.
