Simpson Opposes Democrats' Radical Abortion Legislation

Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson today opposed Democrat legislation to nationalize abortion services on demand, H.R. 8296 and H.R. 8297.

"As expected, House Democrats have drafted extreme legislation in response to the Supreme Court's recent ruling on abortion, moving far past Roe v. Wade and attempting to erode states' rights to protect human life," said Simpson.

Together, H.R. 8297 - the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act of 2022, introduced by Representative Lizzie Fletcher (D-TX), and H.R. 8296 - the Women's Health Protection Act of 2022, introduced by Representative Judy Chu (D-CA), would remove virtually all restrictions on abortion up until the birth of the child, weakening conscience protections for medical professionals and stripping states' rights to uphold pro-life legislation.

"Given that nearly identical legislation to H.R. 8296 has already been voted on in the House this Congress and not signed into law, it's clear that today's bills are simply messaging tactics for Democrats and not serious attempts to legislate," continued Simpson. "I will always fight to protect the rights of the unborn, and these bills were no exception."

Both H.R. 8296 and H.R. 8297 passed the House of Representatives today on a near party line vote and are unlikely to pass in the Senate.
