Rep. Wild Votes to Prevent Gun Violence for Safer Communities

Press Release

Date: July 29, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Guns

Today, Rep. Wild voted for historic legislation, the Assault Weapons Ban of 2021, that will reinstate the assault weapons ban, a key action to ensure safer communities by preventing gun violence and keeping weapons of war off our streets.

"Our nation has seen unspeakable horrors caused by weapons designed with no other purpose but to cause the maximum damage possible," said Rep. Wild. "This bill will not take away guns from people who already legally possess them. But it will make our communities safer--in school, at grocery stores, at concerts. This epidemic of violence must come to an end, that's why I voted for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and the Active Shooter Alert Act, and it's why I voted for this legislation."

For ten years, from 1994 to 2004, Americans were protected by an assault weapon ban and experienced 40% fewer gun crimes involving assault weapons. Since its expiration, gun violence has been on the rise and in 2019 alone, nearly 14,000 Americans were killed with a firearm and almost 300 mass shootings have taken place over the last decade.

This legislation will prohibit the sale, manufacture, transfer, or possession of semiautomatic assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Semiautomatic assault weapons already legally owned will be required to be stored securely and properly, keeping them out of the hands of those not equipped to handle them.
