Rep. Omar's Statement on Proposed Refugee Cap of 125,000

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) released the following statement on the Biden Administration's proposal for a refugee cap of 125,000.

"For centuries, America has been a beacon of hope to millions fleeing oppression around the world. Many of our ancestors came to this country with little to nothing, seeking a better life for themselves and their children. I know this experience personally, having come to America as a young refugee after surviving civil war.

"I am happy that the Biden Administration plans to maintain the goal of admitting 125,000 refugees in 2023. At a time when more people are displaced than any other time in human history and conflicts rage in Ukraine, Yemen, Ethiopia, and Afghanistan, we should be opening our doors to those fleeing oppression.

"Last year, however, the U.S. failed to come close to meeting the refugee cap, partly because of the decimation of the refugee resettlement program under Donald Trump. I hope we do everything in our power to resettle as many migrants as possible in the coming fiscal year and look forward to working with the Administration to make that happen."
