Today, U.S. Representative Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14) voted for S. 2938, The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. This legislation includes protections for victims of domestic violence by closing the boyfriend loophole; penalties for straw purchasing; enhanced background checks for people under 21; investments in children and family mental health services; and increased funding for schools.

"The American people do not need any more thoughts and prayers; they need action. And today, Congress is delivering on that with the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act," said Rep. Lawrence. "With this historic gun violence prevention legislation, we are protecting our children, keeping our schools safe, and combat our country's gun violence epidemic. While there's more work that needs to be done, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is a strong and significant step to save lives."
