Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Inflation Reduction Act, sending it to President Biden's desk for his signature. At the core of the legislative package are provisions championed by Democrats to lower the cost of prescription drugs, health care, and energy bills. Furthermore, the bill makes transformative investments to address the climate crisis while reducing the national deficit by $300 billion. U.S. Representative Brenda Lawrence voted to pass the bill and and issued the following statement:

"The Inflation Reduction Act provides the necessary investments that put people over politics. It is unacceptable that Americans pay three times more for life-saving drugs than people in other countries," said U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence (MI-14). "No one should have to worry about whether or not they can afford health care or the medicine they need. That is why I helped pass the Inflation Reduction Act to bring down everyday costs for Michiganders and their families.

"As a 30-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service, I'm thrilled that this bill includes $3 billion for the USPS to purchase zero-emissions vehicles. For Michigan, the EV tax credit is a huge win for our auto industry as we transition to EVs. Additionally, the investments in clean energy will create millions of good-paying union jobs across the country, incentivize domestic manufacturing, and help address the climate crisis."

The Inflation Reduction Act brings down costs for Michiganders while building a cleaner economic future across the country by taking action to:

Lower prescription drug prices: empowering Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription drugs, preventing excessive price hikes and capping seniors' out-of-pocket drug costs at $2,000.
Lower health care costs: reducing Michiganders' premium costs by extending ACA subsidies for three more years, locking in average annual savings of $800 per person.
Lower energy costs: saving Michigan families an average of $1000 per year on their energy bills.
Lower the deficit and help fight inflation: making an historic down payment on deficit reduction of approximately $300 billion.
Deliver America's largest-ever climate investment: supporting domestic energy production, creating nine million good-paying union jobs and reducing carbon pollution by roughly 40 percent this decade.
