Statement

Today, Congressman Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township) released the following statement after voting to pass the Inflation Reduction Act:

"I proudly supported the Inflation Reduction Act, legislation that represents a historic achievement for our people and our planet. The bill includes major investments to tackle the climate crisis and lower health care costs for millions--paid for by making corporations and the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share in taxes.

"From climate disasters to the high cost of living, Americans deserve relief and to finally be put first. Fortunately, this bill takes on the urgently needed transition to a green energy economy while ensuring that clean energy technology will be manufactured in America by our workers here at home. Through these investments, the United States will be able to achieve a 40 percent reduction in dirty carbon emissions by 2030.

"The Inflation Reduction Act will also produce significant savings in Americans' health care costs. For the first time, Medicare will be able to negotiate the cost of prescription drugs and will impose rebates on drug companies if they raise prices faster than the inflation rate. it will also continue the enhanced subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, locking in lower health care premiums that save 13 million people an average of $800 a year and lowering drug prices.

"Throughout my career, I've been fighting for transformative change to save our planet from a total climate disaster and I'm so proud to be a part of this historic moment alongside my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate. I'm grateful for the leadership of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and Chair Jayapal, with whom I have worked closely over the past 18 months to keep these demands on the table as well as that of President Biden, Speaker Pelosi, and Chairs Pallone, Neal, Yarmuth and McGovern. With the passage of this bill, I am confident that the momentum is on our side to continue the investments we need to support working people and families in this country and take even more action on climate change. Let's go!"
