Statement by Congressman Kildee on Suspending the Federal Gas Tax

Statement

Date: June 22, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Energy

Congressman Dan Kildee, Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement after President Joe Biden announced his support for suspending the 18.4 cents per gallon federal gas tax for three months:

"Michigan families are facing higher prices at the gas pump and Congress must act. I introduced the Gas Prices Relief Act in February to give families an immediate tax cut by suspending the federal gas tax through the end of the year. While I am pleased that President Biden now supports suspending the gas tax, doing so for only three months is not sufficient. We must provide real economic relief to families struggling with higher prices. Suspending the federal gas tax for the rest of the year is one way we can put money back in the pockets of working families."

Congressman Kildee has a plan to lower gas prices for Michiganders, including introducing legislation to:

Give Michiganders a tax cut by suspending the federal gas tax throughout the rest of 2022.
Strengthen America's energy independence by allowing the year-round sale of ethanol-blended gas.
Crack down on price gouging by Big Oil.
