Location: Flint, MI
Issues: Guns

Congressman Dan Kildee, Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today applauded the passage of bipartisan legislation, supported by Republicans and Democrats, in the U.S. House of Representatives. This legislation, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, now goes to the President's desk to be signed into law.

"This compromise gun violence prevention bill will save lives. While this legislation does not go as far as I would like, it is the most consequential gun violence prevention legislation passed in decades," Congressman Kildee said. "I believe Congress must continue to act to prevent mass shootings and senseless gun deaths, which happen far too often in America."

The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act will:

Enhance background checks for purchasers under 21-years-old by allowing investigators to review juvenile and mental health records;
Close the "boyfriend loophole" by adding convicted domestic violence abusers in dating relationships to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System to prevent them from purchasing a gun;
Establish crisis intervention orders in every state, including "red flag" laws;
Crack down on gun trafficking and straw purchases to get illegal guns off our streets;
Invest in mental health services for children and families and schools;
Increase funding for community safety by funding community antiviolence programs in cities and school safety initiatives.

Since coming to Congress, Kildee has worked to pass commonsense legislation to prevent gun violence, including legislation to close the "bump stock" loophole, raise the age of purchasing a semiautomatic centerfire rifle from 18 to 21 years old, prohibit large capacity magazines and enact universal background checks for gun purchases.
