Statement by Congressman Kildee on House Passage of the Respect for Marriage Act

Statement

Date: July 19, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Dan Kildee, Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus and member of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus, issued the following statement after Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives today voted to pass the Respect for Marriage Act, which would enshrine marriage equality for same-sex and interracial couples guaranteed by past U.S. Supreme Court decisions for the purposes of federal law:

"Every Michigander should be able to marry the person they love. The constitutional right to marriage is foundational for thousands of same-sex and interracial families in Michigan. In overturning Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court has demonstrated its willingness to take away rights previously granted by the court. The Respect for Marriage Act, supported by Republicans and Democrats, is necessary to protect the progress we've made.

"In Congress, I have always worked to promote equality and prevent discrimination, and I will continue to work to protect the rights of all Americans."
