Congresswoman Nikema Williams Statement Before Voting for Reproductive Rights Legislative Package

Press Release

Date: July 15, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Reproduction

Today, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05), Whip of the Democratic Women's Caucus and a member of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus issued the following statement before voting for the 2022 Women's Health Protection Act and the Ensuring Women's Rights to Reproductive Freedom Act:

"Now that Roe v. Wade is overturned, people across the country are seeing Republican cruelty on full display. In Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp supports a total ban on abortion and Attorney General Chris Carr ran to federal court to implement a six-week abortion ban already ruled unconstitutional. These policies are absurdly out of touch. Nearly 70 percent of Georgians are opposed to overturning Roe v. Wade and the American people overwhelmingly identify as pro choice.

"Access to comprehensive medical care must include abortion and it must be accessible to everyone--no matter your ZIP Code. With the 2022 Women's Health Protection Act and the Ensuring Women's Rights to Reproductive Freedom Act, the House is taking steps to protect everyone's access to abortion. We know that without these protections, the people who will suffer the most are Black and Brown people and communities already facing barriers to healthcare.

"We shouldn't have to fight for our rights, but that is exactly what we have to do. An extremist Supreme Court is hellbent on creating a country where I have fewer rights than my grandparents. This is the fight of our lifetimes, and I will not rest until reproductive freedom is enshrined into law for everyone."
