Jayapal Statement on House Judiciary Advancing Assault Weapons Ban

Statement

Date: July 20, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Guns

U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and member of the House Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement after the Committee passed the Assault Weapons Ban of 2021. This was the first markup of an assault weapons ban since 1994. The bill passed without a single Republican vote.

"The House Judiciary Committee continues its work to be responsive, comprehensive, and just in its mission to end the senseless epidemic of gun violence in our country. On the tenth anniversary of the Aurora shooting, I am so proud that our committee successfully passed an assault weapons ban to prevent the devastation that the Colorado families, and too many across our country, have experienced. Americans have suffered through enough mass shootings to know that these weapons of war do not belong on our streets. With this bill, we will protect Americans' right to life by banning the future manufacturing of these machines and ensuring they will never get in the hands of a killer again.

"Time is of the essence. I urge House Leadership to bring this bill to the floor for a vote immediately so members can vote their conscience, and vote to save lives."
