Newhouse Votes Against Democrats' Billion-Dollar Handout to China

Press Release

Today,Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA), released the following statement after voting against Senate Amendment to H.R. 4346 -- CHIPS-Plus. This legislation seeks to spend billions of taxpayer dollars with limited guardrails in place to prevent the Chinese Communist Party from benefiting--on the same day the United States officially entered a recession.

"The Chinese Communist Party's "Made in China 2025" initiative is yet another roadmap from President Xi to accelerate China's global imperialism and domination goal. Given this threat, we must do more to not just maintain, but increase our competitive edge against China in our critical industries--not pass legislation that has no guardrails to prevent it from funding the CCP. Which is why I have, and continue to, take strong actions to combat China's critical threat to America's industrial supply chains, infrastructure, energy production, and farmland.

Today's reality, whether or not the Biden Administration wants to accept it, is that the United States economy has officially entered a recession. At the same time, Congressional Democrats have announced another $750 billion in new inflationary spending and a tax increase on all Americans. Both the cost of the legislation before the House today and the proposal released last night will put our country at a competitive and economic disadvantage. If the United States is serious about combating China's influence, boosting American research and manufacturing, and maintaining our national security, we must take a comprehensive look at all the ways in which China is trying to interfere with our progress. This legislation fails to do that."
