Cicilline: Following Supreme Court Decision, Congressional Action on Gun Safety is Even More Urgent

Press Release

Date: June 23, 2022

In response to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01), Vice Chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, released the following statement:

"New York, for over a century, limited concealed carry to protect New Yorkers from gun violence. The Court just denied New York's right to keep its people safe, effectively allowing gun owners to be armed in public at all times. This is absurd and dangerous.

"Protecting the lives and safety of Americans is not at odds with our Second Amendment rights. It is our duty to keep people safe and is why multiple states have implemented safety measures like limits on concealed carry. As we see an alarming and persistent increase in gun violence all across this country, the Court's decision today is an illogical, ideological farce from a radical Court that doesn't reflect the will of the American people. Congress's work to end gun violence and protect our communities is now more urgent ever."

Congressman Cicilline is the sponsor of the Assault Weapons Ban, the Untraceable Firearms Act -- which is part of the Protecting Our Kids Act of 2022, the Disarm Hate Act, the Unlawful Gun Buyer Alert Act, and the Fire Sale Loophole Closing Act.
