Gov. Sanford Issues Statement on Budget Passage

GOVERNOR COMPLIMENTS EFFORTS TO PROTECT TAXPAYER DOLLARS, SAYS MORE SHOULD BE DONE TO LIMIT SPENDING, REPAY BORROWING

Gov. Mark Sanford today issued the following statement on the House's passage of their budget:

"First off, I'd like to thank Representatives Ted Pitts, Garry Smith and Scott Talley for the amendment they pushed through to set aside and protect taxpayer dollars," Gov. Sanford said. "Fiscally conservative allies in the House who voted for that amendment fought the good fight, and we'd ask that everyone who's serious about providing relief to taxpayers dedicate more money to that purpose going forward."

"Now that the House is moving into the next spending bill, it remains important for everyone in the House who spoke clearly on the need to repay what was borrowed when times were tough to live by the bill they passed last year on that front. Likewise, by growing government at more than 10 percent, this budget bill runs completely counter to what the House passed earlier this year pledging to hold government growth to 5.9 percent. Fiscally conservative Republicans in the House need to continue making their voices heard on that front."
