Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement in reaction to President Joe Biden's announcement that al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in a U.S. airstrike in Afghanistan:

"The Biden administration has struck a serious blow to the Al Qaeda network. I commend President Biden, and our brave intelligence officers and military personnel for remaining vigilant and prepared to protect our national security interests to eliminate terrorist threats.

"A year after the withdrawal of our military from Afghanistan, there is no doubt the U.S. and our allies must maintain an ability to collect intelligence and conduct counterterrorism operations against those like al-Zawahiri who present a real and continued threat to our national security.

"I look forward to getting more details about this operation from the Biden administration in the coming days."
