Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Abortion

Chair of the House Appropriations Committee Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) this week voted in support of the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act and the Women's Health Protection Act, bills that would protect women travelling for abortion care and enshrine a woman's right to abortion into law, respectively.

"Conservative activists and GOP lawmakers across the country are sprinting to strip away women's fundamental and constitutional right to make their own health care decisions in the wake of the Supreme Court's devastating ruling overturning Roe v. Wade," said Chair DeLauro. "We cannot allow their draconian laws to take effect. House Democrats have passed the Women's Health Protection Act for the second time now and have moved the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act to protect women travelling to receive reproductive health care. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to waste no time taking up these bills. I stand with American women, and I will not sit idly by while the right to abortion is stripped away yet again. We will not go back."

The bills advanced by House Democrats this week would help defend access to reproductive freedom. The Ensuring Access to Abortion Act would prohibit any person acting under color of state law, including private parties, from punishing Americans traveling for reproductive health care, which is protected by the constitutional right to travel. Moreover, the Women's Health Protection Act would enshrine the right to abortion into federal law.

"Access to abortion is a fundamental right," continued DeLauro. "The time to act to defend women's reproductive freedom is now."
