LARSON VOTES FOR COMMON-SENSE GUN SAFETY SOLUTIONS

Press Release

Date: June 8, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Guns

Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) voted for the Protecting Our Kids Act (H.R. 7910) to address the gun violence epidemic in America. In May, Rep. Larson joined Reps. David Cicilline (RI-01) and Robin Kelly (IL-02) to demand the House take immediate additional action to prevent gun violence.

"The mothers from Sandy Hook and Mothers United Against Violence are our most eloquent spokespeople," said Larson. "The House has reflected their concerns and voted. Today is no different. What remains is a Senate that has chosen not to vote on any gun legislation.

"In fact, the Senate hasn't voted on over 400 bills that have passed the House," Larson continued. "Victims and survivors of gun violence know the problem lies in the filibuster and cloture vote. The Senate has to reform. I thank Senators Blumenthal and Murphy for leading the effort to do that in the Senate. The House will continue to pass bills like we have today, so Americans are safer in our schools, grocery stores, and streets."

The Protecting Our Kids Act would:

Raise the age to purchase semiautomatic rifles from 18 to 21,
Implement new federal offenses for gun trafficking and straw purchasing,
Codify the executive order that closed the ghost gun loophole and bump stock loophole,
Require safe storage of firearms so children cannot access them,
Implement a ban on high-capacity magazines,
And create an annual report containing demographic data on people who attempted to purchase a firearm but were stopped by a background check.
