REP. NEGUSE SECURES CRITICAL PROVISIONS FOR ESTABLISHING CLIMATE-RESILIENT PATHWAYS IN FY23 NDAA

Today, Congressman Joe Neguse announced that two of his amendments to improve climate resiliency, mitigation, and adaptation passed the House of Representatives as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year (FY 2023).

"We must prioritize protecting our communities from climate impacts, mitigating the future effects, and continue taking proactive steps towards climate resiliency. I am thrilled to see these policies included in the House version of this package and hope the Senate will support this important effort." said Congressman Neguse.

Specifically, the House passed measures from two newly-introduced Neguse bills;

The Land Restoration and Resiliency Act: establishes the Community Resilience and Restoration Fund, a program to provide grants to communities looking to restore and improve the resilience of public lands through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF).
The Surveying the Heat Island Effect across Large Divisions (SHIELD) Act: directs the construction of large-scale military installations throughout the country, meant to mitigate the "heat island" effect, increasing greenery to mitigate the consequences of this climate phenomenon.
As a member of the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis and the House Natural Resources Committee, Congressman Neguse has become a strong leader on climate action in Congress. Last year Neguse successfully secured 10 amendments in the House version of the FY22 NDAA legislative package, including measures aimed at reducing the military's carbon footprint, protecting U.S. military technology from climate impacts, allowing the DOD greater power to protect local communities and state-owned National Guard installations from the impacts of climate change, and ensuring a more climate-resilient military infrastructure.
