Rep. Weber Votes Against "Gun Reform" Bill

Statement

U.S. Rep. Randy Weber (TX-14) issued the following statement against legislation originating in the U.S. Senate imposing new restrictions on gun ownership.

"This is a somber day for our nation and the Second Amendment. We should be pushing commonsense legislation through Congress rather than going down a slippery slope of government control over our God-given rights," said Rep. Weber. "In my district, we understand that evil people do evil things. Still, you don't restrict law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves with the weapons of their choice from evil people who do evil things. Instead, we should do everything we can to help the school districts; we can get armed professional police officers there to help protect our schools, the kids, teachers, and the staff. It does not have to be about violating the Second Amendment. It does not have to be about taking away gun rights."

Rep. Weber spoke on the House floor urging his colleagues to consider his bill, H.R. 7909, the School Resource Officer Compensation Act would afford our schoolchildren the benefit of trained law enforcement personnel by reducing the costs to schools and school districts for hiring retired law enforcement officers as School Resource Officers (SROs), by exempting employers from having to pay the matching social security contributions, while also shielding SROs from higher tax brackets.
