Energy and Commerce Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Health Subcommittee Republican Leader Brett Guthrie (R-KY) released the following statement about the H.R. 5657, the Medical Marijuana Research Act, led by Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) and Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-VA). H.R 5657 passed the House with bipartisan support.

"The Medical Marijuana Research Act amends the Controlled Substances Act to establish a new, separate registration process to facilitate biomedical research on marijuana. It will support basic research which will allow us to better understand potential medicinal uses and it could help facilitate the development of a future field sobriety test. This is a critical step that should be made before any consideration of removing marijuana from the schedule.

"We appreciate our colleagues, including Rep. Morgan Griffith who was the Republican-lead in Committee, for working in a bipartisan way. This commonsense legislation should have been considered in the People's House instead of taking action on the MORE Act last week to decriminalize marijuana. We look forward to working with the Senate and reconciling differences between the Medical Marijuana Research Act and S. 253, Cannabidiol and Marihuana Research Expansion Act, so we can send a solution for more research to the president's desk."
