Congressman Lowenthal Statement On Uvalde, Texas Elementary School Shooting

Statement

Date: May 25, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Guns

"I have been here too many times. Confronting a mass tragedy, with only words to offer. One of the first public statements I put out as a Congressman-elect was offering my thoughts and prayers over the Sandy Hook school massacre.

"Since then, I have expressed my shock, pain, and anger too many times.

"For Umpqua Community College, for Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, for Santa Fe High, and now, for Robb Elementary. And for a dozen other mass shootings across the nation.

"This is not a time to pray, though prayers are desperately needed.

"This is not a time for heartache, though our hearts should be shattered.

"This is simply not a time for words, because words accomplish nothing.

"This is a time for action. This can't go on. As the president said, "where is our backbone?"

"No more moments of silence. No more thoughts and prayers. We must vote. Today. Right now.

"We are better than this. We must act to address this plague of gun violence."
