Pallone Blasts Supreme Court's Decision Overturning Roe V. Wade

Statement

Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today after the Supreme Court released its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which overturned nearly 50 years of precedent established by Roe v. Wade guaranteeing the constitutional right to abortion:

"A fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution has never been taken away before in the history of the United States. Until today.

"Since our founding, we have made steady and deliberate progress toward forming a more perfect union that strives to better represent and empower all its people.

"Losing the fundamental right to abortion is a lurching step backward that will have devastating consequences across the country.

"This is an unprecedented assault on reproductive health care, women's ability to make their own health care decisions, and the constitutional right to privacy. It also deeply calls into question the Court's capacity to make reasoned decisions grounded in precedent rather than ideologically motivated jurisprudence. This decision will overturn decades of progress and impose an outdated, extremist ideology long pushed by the radical right but opposed by a majority of Americans.

"Today's decision will harm women, their families, and their futures. It will embolden states and anti-abortion politicians to further restrict access to care and opens the door to the erosion of other fundamental rights.

"The Justices who penned this decision should be ashamed. The Senate Republicans who rigged the process to steal seats on the Court should be ashamed. A blight has been cast on the Court as Republicans fulfill their dream of overturning Roe.

"The Senate must pass the Women's Health Protection Act. Republican obstruction and abuse of the filibuster is not an acceptable excuse for inaction when the fundamental rights of millions hang in the balance."
