Press Release

Date: May 18, 2022
Location: Orlando, FL
Issues: Abortion

Today Rep. Demings (FL-10) spoke in defense of Florida women's fundamental constitutional right to control their own lives and futures.

Said Rep. Demings, "I took an oath as an officer to protect every American and our constitutional rights. Your decisions and your beliefs are our own. Your life, your family, your religion, your circumstances, your values, your body - it's yours. Our freedom makes us the greatest nation in the world.

"When I started my family, I didn't ask my congressman's permission or anyone else's. The vast majority of Americans support freedom and equality for America's women. I will always fight for a future where Florida's women are treated as fully equal citizens, where they--not any politician--has the freedom to control their own body, life, and future."

Background

Should the draft opinion become the Court's decision in the case, it would overturn the decades-old decisions in Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey that recognize a constitutional right to abortion.

Rep. Demings helped to introduce and pass through the House the Women's Health Protection Act which would codify Roe v. Wade in federal law. The legislation was blocked in the Senate.

By a two-to-one margin, Americans believe that Roe should be upheld.

Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell has said that a national abortion ban is on the table. Numerous GOP laws would punish women who have abortions and would put doctors in jail.
