Lofgren Condemns Supreme Court's Dobbs Decision

Statement

U.S. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (CA-19) released the following statement following the Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, as delivered at a press conference hosted by Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez:

"This Supreme Court decision is the first ever to take a constitutional right away from Americans. This is a bleak day for our country," said Rep. Zoe Lofgren (CA-19). "The Court has become a partisan body, overthrowing decades of precedent to advance a right-wing political agenda. This decision is the culmination of decades of efforts by the Republican Party to place one far-right ideologue after another on the Court.

"Elections have consequences. Tragically, American women are about to personally suffer those consequences. Make no mistake: women's fundamental rights are on the ballot this November. This November, Californians will have the opportunity to put Roe v. Wade in the state Constitution.

"Roe v. Wade is also on the ballot in House and Senate races this fall. Democrats in the House have already passed legislation to enshrine Roe v. Wade in law. Republicans have made clear their intention to overturn Roe in every state through federal law if they have the majority in the House and Senate next year. They would impose their extreme anti-choice agenda on women across the entire country.

"I'm grateful that our local elected officials strongly support women's rights and will continue to fight for them. I join them in that crucial fight. At least until next year, abortion will remain safe, accessible, and legal in California. But we must take action to keep it that way.

"Freedom is on the line. We need to step up, get busy, and organize to stop Republican plans to impose their right-wing agenda on the entire country."
