Rep. Calvert Statement on Gun Control Legislation

Statement

Date: June 24, 2022
Issues: Guns

Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) issued the following statement regarding the gun control legislation passed today by the House of Representatives:

"The gun legislation passed by the House would have done nothing to prevent the tragic events in Uvalde, and instead erodes the Constitutionally protected Second Amendment rights of Americans. Although I was pleased to see the bill prioritize investments in mental health programs, I could not support the provisions that subsidize state laws that eliminate due process protections for the seizure of law abiding citizens' constitutional rights. The bill would also create a two-tiered justice system for young adults seeking to exercise their constitutional right to keep and bear arms. I was proud to support the Mental Health and Well-Being Act in the House this week that deals with the underlying mental health crisis in this country that is the primary driver of these horrific mass shooting events; the House-passed mental health bill contains many of the mental health provisions included in the Senate's gun control bill without infringing on the Second Amendment. Earlier this week, I voted in support of legislation to establish an Active Shooter Alert system to save lives by notifying people in the event of an active shooter in their area. I hope to continue working with my colleagues to address the root causes of gun violence without undermining the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans."
