Luján Statement on Supreme Court Ruling on Biden v. Texas

Press Release

Date: June 30, 2022
Location: Washington, D.C.

U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after the decision of the Supreme Court upholds the Biden Administration acted lawfully to end the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)'s Migrant Protections Protocols (MPP) or "Remain in Mexico" policy:

"The Supreme Court's decision to allow the administration to end the "Remain in Mexico' policy is the first step toward remedying years of humanitarian injustice. This dangerous, xenophobic policy established by the Trump administration has forced tens of thousands of vulnerable children, families, and other asylum seekers into unsafe conditions before their asylum requests can even be heard. MPP has inflicted irreparable harm to nearly hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers and has damaged our status as a leader on refugee protection.

"The Biden administration must take the final steps to swiftly end this policy and establish a safe and humane asylum process. I plan to work with my colleagues on a bipartisan basis to continue my career-long push to fix our broken immigration system."
